WHY WE LIKE IT - Kanonkop Estate has been described by those in the know as being the South African equivalent of a Premier Cru. Whenever discussing South Africa's long-standing stalwart estates, a lot of young winemakers can be quite dismissive, citing poor winemaking practices and their zeal for high volume/low quality wines that did much to tarnish the image of South Africa. The one exception is always Kanonkop, a beacon for quality for many many years.
TASTING NOTES -The bright ruby color of this wine is complimented on the nose by attractive aromas of red currants, cherries, spice and a touch of mocha. The palate is lively and fresh, with succulent raspberry flavors. The fruit is supported by a firm, yet silky tannin structure. Savory notes persist on the lengthy finish.
PRODUCTION NOTES: Aged in barrel for 12 months in second-, third- and fourth-fill French barriques.
PARK PLACE SOMMELIER PAIRING - Pair with grilled/roasted meats with an herbal/savory preparation, hearty stews/sauces, pasta with tomato-based sauces. Try with Pasta Puntanesca.
