the gently rolling hills of the Russian River Valley, a short journey west of Nickel & Nickel’s Napa Valley vineyards, lies our Darien Vineyard — singular among our locations in that it produces the only Syrah in our portfolio. Why just one? Simple: We study, understand, and respect the land that lies beneath our grape vines. The soil and conditions of the Darien Vineyard are so well suited to “Syrah” that we had no choice but to listen. And we are certainly glad we did.
Here, cool, foggy mornings give way to warm afternoon sun, allowing the exposed fruit to ripen evenly, and the loam derived from the Huichica soils series yields grounds that feature a blend of mixed sedimentary, volcanic ash and basic rock sources. There are two different clones planted in our Darien Vineyard, each contributing its own unique flavors to the wine. Nickel & Nickel selects fruit from three-and-three-quarter acres of the 25-acre vineyard.
